Supervisory Skills 101

Supervisory Skills 101

Summary

It has been my good fortune to have been supervised by several good supervisors. It has also been my misfortune to have had unpleasant experiences. Because of this I am convinced that good supervisors are born but all benefit from training where they focus on supervision knowledge and skills, reflect on their role and responsibilities and learn to integrate teaching, counseling and consulting skills. This training teaches these preliminary skills, such as being comfortable with authoritative and evaluative functions, how personal traits and interpersonal style affects supervision, and how to employ a variety of supervision interventions.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of this training the student will be able to:
  • Understand the three functions of supervision
  • List the characteristics of a good and poor supervisor
  • Explain the three developmental stages of a supervisor and supervised
  • Effectively prepare for supervision
  • Understand and be aware of resistance within supervises
  • Give difficult feedback effectively
  • Be aware of ethical issues in supervision
  • Document effectively
