Description “ Ethical awareness is a fundamental part of the professional practice of social workers. Their ability and commitment to act ethically is an essential aspect of the quality of the service offered to those who use social work services” (International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), 2008). In the context of a rapidly changing society and diminishing resources, the ethical challenges facing social workers today requires motivation, courage and the willingness to address moral and ethical concerns. This roundtable discussion will provide a forum for discussing ethical issues facing social workers in every day practice.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion participants will be able to:
· Identify and define some of the many ethical issues facing social workers in the profession today.
· Discuss in more detail and depth the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics as a source of guidance for social work practice
· Demonstrate an understanding of the professional standards that one must uphold throughout ones practice as a professional social worker.
· Recognize and explain some of the ethical dilemmas facing social workers today and how to make efforts to properly handle them.
· Discuss issues of fair allocation of resources and how this may be a source of conflict in ethical decision making.
· Recognize opportunities for enhancing professional effectiveness in dealing with complex ethical issues through the use of supervision, peer support, workshops and presentations on ethical issues in social work practice and NASW.
