Description Abstract: Most people do not think about grief, mourning and death on a daily bases; yet over six thousand Americans die each day. Individuals left behind include children and youth who are often the “overlooked” mourners of our society. This presentation will explore the sociological, clinical, developmental and emotional aspects of grieving, mourning and death for children and youth. Treatment strategies as a means to holistic healing will be identified and explore.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion participants will be able to:
· Describe grief and its long time implications if left untreated
· Recognize and explain the impact of socialization on children and youth in handling grief, mourning and death
· Discuss gender differences in handling grief, mourning and death
· Identify common grief reactions in children and youth including common grief reactions in various developmental stages
· Recognize the impact of media and various cultural and religious beliefs on the process
· Describe possible clinical implications including the effects on the emotional, academic and social well-being of the child
