h2. Description

Summary This is a multimedia presentation that examines the world of self injury from both the client and clinician’s perspective. In addition to defining the population of people who self injure, we will explore the various reasons for, as well as common experiences of trauma that precipitate self-injurious behavior. The overarching goal is to empower clinicians to effectively treat, work with, and help these clients find healthier and more effective ways of coping. Ultimately, it is about offering hope and healing to a misunderstood, disenfranchised population.

Due to the nature of the material, some participants may find the presentation psychologically and/or physically arousing. The facilitators are not only prepared to handle abreactions among participants, but are prepared to teach and demonstrate self-soothing and containment techniques to be utilized in the workshop, as well as outside the workshop with clients inside the clinician’s office.

Objectives

Ø Participants will define self-injury and gain understanding of its function as a coping mechanism.
Ø Participants will gain a working knowledge of the current theories of the etiology of self-injurious behavior.
Ø Participants will gain a working knowledge of current treatment modalities including: how to handle disclosure, medication options, when to hospitalize, DBT skills training, mindfulness, guided visualization, and meridian points and poses for calming and self-soothing.
Ø Participants will gain recognition of his/her own attitudes toward self-injuring clients and how they could or might impede treatment.
